Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Sofyan Amrabat is back in contention for Manchester United, having been freed up following Morocco’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations. This presents a valuable opportunity to bolster the team’s midfield strength.
On loan from Fiorentina since last summer, Sofyan Amrabat, who played a pivotal role in Morocco’s journey to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, has faced challenges in leaving his imprint at Old Trafford amid a turbulent season for Manchester United.
Having commenced seven Premier League games and accruing three yellow cards without contributing any goals, Amrabat left for AFCON 2023 in the Ivory Coast. Despite featuring in four matches, Morocco suffered a 2-0 upset by South Africa in the last 16.
In the thrilling 4-3 win against Wolves on Thursday, Manchester United fielded a near full-strength side, featuring Kobbie Mainoo alongside Casemiro in central midfield. However, Amrabat’s comeback promises to enhance squad depth, a crucial addition for a team grappling with numerous injuries throughout the season.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Ham, ‘He knows what he has to do’ – Erik ten Hag on Jadon Sancho’s future revealed the loanee midfielder is available again.
“Sofyan will return on Saturday in the training,” Ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference. “Ty [Tyrell Malacia] and Mason Mount, I don’t expect them back, but Victor Lindelof, I think he is on his way back. He trained with the team on Wednesday and we have to see how far he is [along].
“Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also on the way back. He could be available but I don’t think he will make it for Sunday. But I’m not sure at this moment. There is a problem in his leg.”
Andre Onana returned to Man Utd’s starting XI for the triumph at Wolves. The former Inter goalkeeper featured only once for Cameroon before their elimination by Nigeria in the last 16 of the competition.
