Ligue 1 Strugglers Lyon Part Ways with Manager Fabio Grosso After a Brief Seven-Game Stint.
At 46, Grosso departs, leaving Lyon, seven-time French champions, anchored at the bottom of the table with just one victory in his seven Ligue 1 matches.
Less than 11 weeks after stepping in for the dismissed Laurent Blanc in September, Fabio Grosso faces his own dismissal from Lyon.
Former champions Lyon, last crowned in 2007-08, have appointed Frenchman Pierre Sage to take charge on a temporary basis following the departure of Fabio Grosso.
“Olympique Lyonnais would like to thank Fabio Grosso and his assistants for their dedication and professionalism since taking over the professional team,”
Lyon’s 2-0 home defeat against Lille on Sunday leaves them with seven points after 12 games, placing them five points adrift of safety.
Grosso, a former Italy international who played for Lyon from 2007 to 2009, faced a significant setback when he was seriously injured in an attack on the team’s bus in Marseille in October.
Both Grosso and assistant Raffaele Longo were struck by projectiles during the attack, resulting in facial injuries. Grosso, the Lyon manager, was visibly bandaged above the eye as a consequence.
Grosso, credited for guiding Italian club Frosinone to Serie A promotion last season, played a pivotal role in Lyon’s sole victory this season against Rennes in November. Although his contract was slated to continue until June 2024, academy coach Pierre Sage is set to take charge in Lyon’s upcoming match against Lens on Saturday.
