At the GTECH Community Stadium, Liverpool faced a deepening injury crisis as Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were both compelled to leave the field during the initial half of their Saturday match against Brentford.
At the halftime break in west London, the Reds held a one-goal advantage thanks to Darwin Nunez’s exquisite chip, yet Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp’s management, faced health concerns with the injury woes of Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota during the first half.
Midfielder Curtis Jones suffered an ankle injury following an awkward fall due to a challenge from Sergio Reguilon. Despite attempting to persevere after extensive treatment, Jones experienced immediate discomfort and opted to exit the pitch. Ryan Gravenberch took his place after 34 minutes.
Diogo Jota, instrumental in setting up Nunez’s opening goal with a superb header, faced an abrupt exit as he was unintentionally landed on by Brentford captain Christian Norgaard. Despite attempting to stand, the Portugal international couldn’t do so and had to be stretchered off, tightly clutching his right arm as he left the field.
Mohamed Salah, making a return, stepped in for Jota after the latter’s injury. Salah, previously sidelined due to a hamstring injury from the Africa Cup of Nations last month, was named on the bench and entered the game as a substitute.
Darwin Nunez was substituted at half-time, with Cody Gakpo taking his place. The reason for Nunez’s substitution remains unclear, and it is uncertain whether it is attributed to any injury.
Liverpool faced additional setbacks with goalkeeper Alisson sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold experiencing a setback in his recovery from a knee problem, and midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Thiago Alcantara also on the treatment table.
What Next?
Liverpool is set to face Luton Town at Anfield on Wednesday, followed by the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley next Sunday. Unfortunately, Alexander-Arnold, Szoboszlai, and Thiago are confirmed absentees, with assessments pending for the other injured players in the squad.
