Tottenham beat Man U in the race to sign Timo Werner!
Tottenham have agreed to sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. The former Chelsea forward, who is 27 years old, is expected to join Spurs until the end of the season with an option to buy for around £15 million.
Manchester United had previously held exploratory talks over a move for Werner, but Spurs have now taken the lead in signing him.
Werner was left out of the RB Leipzig squad for their friendly against Swiss side St Gallen as talks between the two clubs progressed. RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose later confirmed that Werner will be leaving the club this month and that he will be going on loan.
Tottenham are reportedly covering Werner’s full wages and a medical could take place as soon as Sunday. Spurs have moved quickly to recruit cover in attack, with Heung-min Son away at the Asia Cup and James Maddison still nursing a long-term injury. Werner first arrived in England from RB Leipzig in 2020 when Chelsea signed him for £45 million, but he struggled to perform and scored just 23 goals in 89 games across two seasons. He did win the Champions League with Chelsea, but was not considered a crucial part of the team. Werner returned to RB Leipzig in 2022 for just £25.3 million and has since scored 18 goals in 54 games.
